This is an Ethernet interface and can connect to a second ADSL modem, cable modem or any other Ethernet-based Internet feed. The DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router's secondary interface can be used either for WAN-Backup or load balancing. The DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn features the latest 802.11n Draft 2.0 wireless LAN specification and has been certified by the WiFi alliance for cross compatibility and WiFi compliance (including WPA/WPA2 and WMM).

802.11n Draft 2.0 provides a total wireless bandwidth of up to 300Mb/s using new methods such as packet aggregation and channel bonding. Throughput depends on your own environment (factors such as obstructions, number of hosts and distance all make a significant difference), but actual transfer speeds of 100Mb/s are achievable (based on our real world tests). In addition, 802.11n Draft 2.0 provides greater coverage and resilience to interference compared to previous wireless standards thanks to the MIMO technology and the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn's triple-antennae diversity arrangement. This offset arrangement of aerials on the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router provides offset paths between hosts so that interference can be overcome.

Wireless Security is comprehensive too; the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn provides several independent levels of security including encryption (up to WPA2), authentication (802.11x) and methods such as MAC address locking and DHCP fixing to restrict access to authorised users only. DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn models equipped with Wireless LAN support a system called WDS (Wireless Distribution System) which enables you to use the wireless capability to bridge to another network, within wireless range. You need an additional compatible wireless router for this of course. Here is a simple example:

With WDS bridging, both networks should be within the same logical IP subnet (IP address range). Once set up, all of the PCs on both sides of the link can access each other, across the wireless bridge. Local wireless devices such as a laptop can continue to use their local access point.

An additional mode, as shown above, called 'repeating', allows you to set up a third station. In the diagram below, the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router at 'B' is set up in repeating mode, relaying traffic between LANs at A and C. Therefore, all three physical networks can communicate with each other over the wireless links.

Twin analogue phone ports and an FXO analogue line port provide full PSTN and VoIP integration on the same phones, via both the Internet and your regular analogue line. The two phones can be used independently and simultaneously for both incoming and outgoing calls.

As well as the two telephone ports, the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router has a a third port, the FXO (Line) port, which connects into your regular analogue line (PSTN/POTS*). This then gives the telephones access to your analogue line to allow you to make calls as well as your VoIP facility (you can select the PSTN line instead of VoIP by dialling #0). Incoming calls are automatically switched through to your telephone(s) (either one or both) by the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router so that each phone can be used for both VoIP and POTS calls. Both telephones plugged into your DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router have access to VoIP and your analogue line. In addition, using the 'Digit-Map' facility in the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router you can set rules about particular call destinations using either the POTS line or your SIP/VoIP service. For example, local calls can be routed by the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router via your PSTN line (if you have a free calls package for example) whereas international calls can go via your preferred VoIP provider; there is flexibility to have several digit-map rules.

The above diagram should be used as a working schematic only, rather than an exact representation of the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router's connectivity and should be viewed with these notes: Of the two ISDN ports (available on 'S' models only), ISDN Port 1 can be configured either as a TE Port, that is, for connecting into an ISDN2e/Highway line or configured as an S0 Bus for local connection to ISDN telephones or other compatible ISDN equipment. ISDN Port 2 is permanently configured as an Internal S0 Bus. The DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn's USB port can host a compatible 3G modem or cellphone for access to the cellular network for full Internet Access. Most UK networks now provide high speed HSDPA data connections at up to 3.6Mb/s download speed. The DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn ADSL2+ VoIP Wireless-N Firewall Router's 3G connection can be used as your primary/only Internet access, or as backup to your main ADSL line connection. This is not only ideal for homes or offices which don't want to pay fixed line + broadband rental, but also for temporary locations, or those to where fixed lines aren't available.

With the DrayTek Vigor 2820Vn your local users can be connected wirelessly to the router, so instant free 'hotspots' can be deployed quickly and easily. Network Attached Storage (NAS)

The Vigor 2820 Series's USB port can also be used to add storage memory to the unit in the form of a USB memory key (as shown right) or for higher capacity a USB hard drive (normally requires its own power). The Vigor 2820 then provides FTP access file uploading/downloading which can be from the local LAN or from anywhere on the Internet - ideal for a simple to deploy file depository. Access can be 'public' or using usernames and passwords, each of which can have their own directories and/or file access rights. As well as FTP, file sharing is available as a Windows 'network drive'. Using Internet Explorer, you can view the contents of the USB drive connected to the Vigor 2820 and read or write files.

Dial-up Backup

Dial-Up Backup (Analogue)

If you rely on your Internet connection, you can allow for ADSL failure by adding dial-up backup to your Vigor2820. Dial-up backup uses a 'good old-fashioned' analogue modem to dial a backup ISP in the event your ADSL line or ISP fails, either temporarily or for an extended period. The add-on analogue modem (seen below) provides 'V92' connections (up to 52000bps downstream speed) which is somewhat slower than your broadband connection but certainly usable for light web browsing, email and all other online activities which you really can't do without.

The Vigor 2820 will detect when your ADSL connection fails and automatically start the dial-up connection using the modem which is connected to the router's USB port. Once ADSL service is restored, the router will hang-up the dial-up call. Note : The modem is an optional accessory, not included with the router.

There are lots of 'free' dial-up ISPs in the UK which you can use in an emergency; you pay only for the call costs (normally 0845 Lo-Call Rate). Alternatively, you can subscribe to an ISP who offers a 'FRIACO' service, where your dial-up calls are free of charge, for a monthly subscription.

Analogue Dial-Up on its own As well as backup to your ASDL connection, you can use dial-up connection permanently without ADSL line. This is ideal for shared Internet access, or wireless access to the Internet in temporary locations where an ADSL line isn't available, and an alternative to the 3G modem solution also available on the Vigor 2820.
